Body weight is a distinctive individual characteristic of each person. However, there are certain standards that we can use in order to determine in which outlines is our body weight. Normal weight is the one which is in the borders of 0-9 % above the ideal body weight. Overweight is in the outlines of 10-19 % above ideal weight, and obesity is when the body weight is 20 % above ideal weight. Ideal body weight can be determined by using certain computer programs or ready tables.

When we speak of body weight control in most cases we think about reducing the body weight, while the increase of body weight is less present in practice.
